Introduction

One of the 17-brands under the Betsson Group, Betsafe has a simple but seemingly purer look at what sports betting can be. As a customer, you see a website that looks like it’s trying hard with its name to emphasize on safety, and then presents a run-of-the-mill structure that does nothing special.

If you’re looking for a website that does what the label says, and nothing more or less – then Betsafe is a great place for you to come and spend your money. The brand itself may have a lot more history because of the company that owns and runs it, but there’s very little marketing dollars being spent on it, which indicates the brand’s importance in the eyes of the Betsson Group itself.

That said, we give it a fair run to see if it is a good option for us to put our money on.

Key Features

There’s not a lot happening for Betsafe that’s out of the ordinary, when it comes to features of a Sportsbook. They have some interesting little tools that simplify searching for upcoming events but nothing out of the ordinary.

Upcoming Events Slider

A little slider that allows you to filter out events based on how close they are to the current time. You have the option of picking between 1hr, 8hrs, today and 48hrs. The available sports and bets in the left-sidebar keep changing based on this slider.

Dynamic List of Sports

The left-sidebar offers a dynamic list of sports that changes on the basis of the upcoming events slider that you set above it. Only the sports with upcoming events are visible so even if it’s basketball season, if there are no games coming up in the next 48hrs, 8hrs or 1hr (or whatever you set the slider to), then you won’t find basketball listed in the left-sidebar.

Popular Bets

Based on what’s happening around their website (presumably), Betsafe marks out certain sports and events as the popular markets and events that people are betting on. This section is present right in the front and centre of the screen so it’s not really your favourites sports or teams to bet on, but the overall site’s most popular picks.

Betsafe Millions

This is probably their most unique offering where customers can participate in a gameshow style quiz on sports and win up to a million dollars. The questions are related to sporting events so you have to bet on specific outcomes and you keep going up the ladder towards that million dollars if you keep getting it right.

Stream Schedule

Betsafe doesn’t offer live streaming for all its events but when it does offer live streaming, you can find it here.

So as you can see, there’s nothing out of the ordinary on Betsafe that makes it stand out of the crowd but they do check all the minimum requirement boxes and also managed to add a bit of flair to some of them. They also do not seem to realise that people need to be above the age of 19 to play in Ontario – and they list just 18.

User Interface and Experience

Betsafe has a slightly outdated website design where everything feels a bit clunky and thrown together with the desire to accommodate different requirements, but without too much thought on where and why to add them in. Take, for example, their top-menu bar – it contains Sports, Live Betting, Casino, Betgames, Live Casino, Poker, Deposit and Mobile. Out of these, mobile is basically a QR code to download the app for your Apple or Android device, but “Deposit” doesn’t really do anything.

If you are logged in, it allows you to deposit money easily but if you are not logged in, it’s just a blank page where nothing loads up. They offer the option to login via M. Signature and Smart ID – neither of which are for Canadian customers – but appear to be part of their European offerings.

There betslip sits on the right of the screen, pinned there by default. However, when you unpin it, it collapses like it should, but not where you’d expect it to be. It doesn’t collapse to the right where you’d expect it to, and instead collapses on the bottom, to the left of the Chat button, and is barely visible because the colour just merges with the background.

Betsafe have all the components you’d need to want to play with them but the positioning, colours and overall look and feel make it an extremely tedious website to work your way through. Lots of room for improvement here!

Games and Sports

This is where things start looking up with Betsafe – they have a whole bunch of sports on offer and although you can only see the availability of sports based on what’s coming up in the next 48hrs, their range of availability makes it seem that they are doing pretty well in this area.

All the regulars are covered and they also have some less-popular sports like Biathlon, Bandy, eSports FPS and MOBA games – so if you know about an upcoming obscure event, check out Betsafe because they might have some odds running on those as well.

Football Rating

Let’s get one thing clear – Betsafe proves they aren’t North American or even care enough about the North American market to call the sport – “American Football”. They’ve completely forgotten that there’s Canadian Football as well, but that’s probably far too advanced for them – baby steps for now.

That said, their football offerings aren’t the best – they have all the required games and lines, but their props aren’t the best. They only offer the main lines, some handicaps, totals, halves and, for some games, have prop bets listed under Stats – but not enough and not nearly as well done as some of the other sportsbooks out there.

Hockey Rating

This is where they do it differently – they have Ice Hockey and Field Hockey, and that pleases us because most sportsbooks tend to combine the two and there’s a huge difference between how popular field hockey is around the world, and how few countries actually play Ice Hockey.

They cover both women’s and men’s leagues in both sports, including under-21s, and that makes the offering a far better option as compared to their American Football offering. Not all these events have handicaps, props or totals so options may be limited to money lines for the smaller events.

Basketball Rating

Betsafe has a decent basketball offering as well – covering multiple leagues from multiple countries and offering a whole bunch of markets to put your money on. The more popular games and leagues come with more handicaps, props and totals to choose from, which is what you’d expect from any sportsbook that’s not as big or expansive as the main guys in the industry.

College Sports Rating

College sports is quite bleak for Betsafe – there isn’t too much happening and for all that they do have, there’s not much to go by. They don’t have a separate section for college sports so it’s under each sport that you’ll have to look for NCAA games. When you do find one, don’t be surprised if the odds look unwelcoming and probably something you may not want to work with.

Soccer Rating

True to the identify of a European sportsbook, Betsafe does Soccer, or “Football” as they call it, quite well. They have all the big leagues and games lined up, and sometimes you may find odds that are different and better than others as well. They are as good as it gets in Soccer for most smaller sportsbooks so you won’t be too disappointed here.

Betting Odds Review

Betsafe does not make their own odds – they are part of the Betsson brand, and they pick their odds up from there. There’s not too much wrong with what they offer in terms of what you’d expect from any of the smaller players in the industry – they get some things right, some things wrong, and some things you’ll probably never look at.

The overall picture is quite average and they don’t seem to run as many boosts as some of the other brands – at least we didn’t see any when testing it out for our review.

Again, this is about par for the course with Betsafe – they do a decent job but nothing too good or too bad. Hanging about in the middle compared to other bookmakers so you’ll have to look around for some hits and misses here.

Bonuses Offered

When you land on the Betsafe website for the first time, you cannot see the bonuses at all – which is extremely unusual. They do have a promotions page but there didn’t seem to be any way to get there – the only way we found it was when we searched for deposit and withdrawal methods and that just seems wrong. We figured out why though – their site does not check your location and sends you to wherever the first search result came from – for us it was Italy.

Once there, you see a whole bunch of promotions such as multiple sign-up bonuses as well as a sign-up bonus for their sportsbook with 100% match up to $500, which also comes with 100-free spins and a $5 live casino bonus. They are a casino-first site though and you will find much more happening there than on the Sportsbook front. They do offer parlay insurance and that’s about it! If you want sportsbook bonuses from Betsafe – good luck!

Deposits and Withdrawals

Betsafe allows you to deposit money through the following options:

  • Interac
  • VISA
  • Mastercard
  • ecoPayz
  • Instant Banking
  • Paysafe Card
  • MuchBetter

All deposits are instant and they have a $15 minimum deposit limit for everything besides Interac, ecoPayz and paysafe Card.

For withdrawals, they offer the following options:

  • Interac
  • VISA
  • ecoPayz
  • Bank Transfer

Interact allows a minimum withdrawal for $10, everything else is $20. All the methods take 2-5 business days to complete the transfer, except ecoPayz, which takes 24hrs.

Safety and Security

Betsafe conforms to the European GDPR regulations when it comes to setting consumer rights over how your data is processed and stored. They use secure encrypted means to carry out deposits and transfers while all your data is stored under a safe and secure SSL layer.

All in all, it appears as though they have covered all their bases when it comes to safety and security.

Mobile App Info

The Betsafe mobile app is actually much better suited to use than their website, and if you are planning to consider Betsafe as your sportsbook of choice, we would recommend downloading the mobile app. They only have an Android app so there’s not much else to go with, but their app is very well designed and we would definitely prefer it to their website when it comes to betting.

There are many usage issues though as you keep getting logged out and when you log back in, you don’t go back to where you were. However, that’s something that goes with the overall UI/UX of Betsafe and the experience is pretty frustrating overall.

Customer Service

Betsafe has a help center that has a whole bunch of questions and answers for you to pick from. You can find the questions divided into different areas like verification, withdrawals, technical and more. They do have phone, chat and email support options, which is great!

They also list their response times on each of these modes, so Betsafe actually surprises us on this front and does a great job!

Average User Reviews

Customers on the Apple App Store do not seem to like Betsafe too much and have given an average of 3.3 out of 5 rating. The most common complaints appear to be related to how their app keeps logging users out and sends users to the wrong place when they log in. That, combined with the fact that they don’t have an Android app means that they rate very poorly in our books too!

Review Conclusion

A large part of the review on Betsafe was written without seeing the Canadian site – before we realised that they were not redirecting users to the Canadian site. Once we realized that, we went back and corrected a few things but there’s still so much that is wrong with Betsafe.

There are many things that are right, but those are areas where Betsafe does a job that’s just as good as anyone else, not better. It’s the parts that they get wrong that really bugs you and makes the experience less than desirable.

Overall, there is a lot of room for Betsafe to make things better and we’ll probably check back on them in a few days to see if some thing’s changed.
