Founded in 2009, the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is the parent company of the BetRivers gambling app, which has become one of the frontrunners in the Ontario, Canada market. As one of the few companies that has come from a brick-and-mortar background, BetRivers has shown the tendency to follow the ways of the older, more traditional forms of marketing their brand.
They are, however, one of the bigger names in the industry and unlike some of the fly-by-night, have a solid foundation of gambling history that drives their online app – both for the Sportsbook and the Casino. They are, however, a Casino-first company and that shows in the way their website is laid out. However, we’re here to discuss the sportsbook so let’s take a deeper look into how it shapes up.
From the outset, the BetRivers website looks quite busy for a sportsbook app – there’s a lot happening everywhere and it takes some getting used to. While most of the website is designed to cover the usual bases that every sportsbook has, there are parts that are entirely unique to the BetRivers app.
BetRivers dedicates an entire space to the live streaming of sporting events – they don’t have live streams for all their live events but for events that are popular, they have the rights to show live games as long as you are logged in.
This is a very special section that they have dedicated to prop bets – They have prop bets for special leagues like the NFL, NBA, NHL and the English Premier League. However, it’s not a collection of all their prop bets listed in one single space – it is a combination of some of their most popular prop bets for each of these leagues, placed together in one convenient place for you to find and instantly add to your betslip.
House specials on BetRivers are a bit like the Prop bets you find in Prop Central, but with a twist – they are generally based on the live games that are starting or already underway, and they have one key difference from other prop bets – they have a time limit!
Basically, you are betting on a prop, and against a shot-clock that keeps running down after which the bet’s no longer available. This could be odds boost or a unique prop bet but whatever it might actually be, it is completely unique to BetRivers.
Almost all companies have this and BetRivers is no different – they have a bunch of Futures that they present under different branding – like NFL Leaders. All they’re doing is sharing their NFL Futures under a different name, but in essence, they do this for most of the top sports they have on their site, as well as the biggest leagues that people tend to bet on.
This is probably the most unique feature of their site – the ability to quickly find and add a pre-made parlay bet to your betslip, with the click on one button. Their Quick Picks are limited to their Same Game Parlay mode so all the parlay bets you see in two different collapsible sections are basically Same Game Parlay bets for some of the games that are about to go live.
BetRivers runs their own loyalty program under the name iRush – where you get rewards for playing with regularity on the platform. There are different prizes available ranging from free spins to guaranteed bonus amounts depending on how often you play with them.
Besides the regular features of every sportsbook, these unique features or, in some cases, uniquely named features make BetRivers an extremely exciting and interesting sportsbook to create an account on.
This is where things get a little muddled with BetRivers because they’re trying to do too much and there’s a lot happening as soon as you land on their website. They have a light-coloured interface which allows them to use coloured logos and icons for leagues, teams and their special website sections. That means – a lot of elements jump out of the screen, asking for your attention immediately. They have the massive Quick Picks section that are available in two places – for some reason.
You can find Quick Picks straight down the middle of the main section of the site, as well as on the right side-bar – and for both these Same Game Parlay Quick Pick sections, you can scroll to the right to see more options, which doesn’t make sense.
Then there’s the “Real Winners” section on the bottom right of the side bar, which is another unnecessary section that tries to play on your FOMO – if you see others winning, you might want to become one of them and try to play more until you win more. It also connects the casino to the sportsbook and might be a way for them to try and encourage players to move from the sportsbook to the casino – all it does it take up a lot of space.
The left side bar has a list of all the games, as does the top menu bar – which is a standard for most igaming website designs. They do have a scrolling marquee for latest bonuses and offers running right below the top-menu, and some of them are for promotions while others take you to special prop bets on their unique sections. You could say that BetRivers should do a much better job than they have, at the moment, for their UI/UX.
BetRivers has a long list of sports that you can stake money on, ranging from all the popular sports like football, basketball and soccer, and going down the list to some relatively less popular sports – like Lacrosse and Chess – to some of the more obscure sports like Jai Alai, Olympic and winter sports.
You’ll also find something else that’s quite unique to BetRivers – their TV & Novelty markets! This is where you can bet on the Emmy awards, the Grammy or Oscar awards, as well as bet on things that are in the news under their “In the Spotlight” section – such as, who’ll be the next James Bond.
If you’re a serious sports bettor or just someone who’s trying to have a bit of fun, BetRivers has a lot going on at all times.
They have one of the most mature markets for football, with all the Canadian and American leagues the NFL and even college football taken care of in great detail. You can find the prop bets, futures and money lines across all the games while you can also bet on unique events like the NFL Draft – and that’s truly a unique betting market that opens once a year!
Hockey is popular around the world and the BetRivers website does complete justice to the field hockey version of the sport as well as the Ice Hockey version of the sport. Every top league in Europe and North America is covered and you can find futures and prop bets for even the most obscure games in the smallest leagues around the world.
Basketball markets on BetRivers are as good as they get on any sportsbook with everything from the NBA and WNBA to the EuroCup, FIBA Champions League and other countries’ leagues covered under one umbrella. Like the NFL, not only do you get a chance to bet on the leagues and the games, you can also bet on the drafts, including the WNBA Draft Lottery.
Unlike some sportsbooks, BetRivers does not have a section dedicated to college sports as such – however, they do have sections dedicated to them if those sports are in season. For example, you may find all the football markets under the NCAAF tab – and you get everything from Same Game Parlay Quick Picks to futures and prop bets for college sports as well. Amateur American college spots are treated with the same amount of respect on BetRivers as professional sports.
Soccer probably has the largest number of markets on BetRivers, when it comes to sheer numbers. They carry leagues from all over the world – from Peru to Thailand – and they have money lines, futures and prop bets for all these leagues. Some of these leagues are also represented separately in the Top Soccer section and you’ll find a dedicated section for prop bets under their Prop Central or House Specials sections, when games are running live.
BetRivers are one of the top bookmakers in the Canadian market but they do not create their own odds – they use the services of Kambi to prepare their odds and while there are not too many differences between what you might find on BetRivers as compared to what you might on any other website that is powered by Kambi, you may find something that is unique every now and then.
BetRivers are known to tweak some things around to provide some special odds for certain events that other Kambi data users might not have, but the difference isn’t enough to grant them a higher rating.
When you click on the Promotions tab on the top menu, a little sidebar pops up with all their currently available promotions. There aren’t too many promos running at any given time and barring the Welcome bonus and a second chance bonus, all other offers direct users towards their loyalty program or features designed for the loyalty program.
If you are a member of BetRivers and have joined up with their loyalty program, you get access to a lot more bonuses and free spins based on how much time and money you spend on their website. However, for those who are not a part of the loyalty program, you might not find too much. That said, all you have to do to be a part of the program is place a bet – you get points for every bet you place and that puts you in the loyalty program automatically and gives you a shot at some great benefits that include birthday gifts, thank you dinners and more!
BetRivers allows you to place deposits with the following providers:
There’s a minimum $10 deposit requirement for all these options and the deposits are completed almost instantly.
With withdrawals, the options are limited to:
The minimum withdrawal amount for both these options is $10 and it takes about 1-2 days on each of them to process the withdrawal.
BetRivers uses a variety of safety features such as Strong Authentication, to safeguard your account. This is a process where you receive a text message with a one-time passcode to access your account or to carry out any withdrawals from your account.
As a licensed operator in Ontario, they are also bound by regulations to provide the highest levels of security to their customers, when it comes to protecting account and banking information.
Like all modern sportsbooks, the BetRivers mobile app is also a progressive web app, which means that the experience on the website is very similar to the experience on the mobile app. The BetRivers app is surprisingly better to look at and use on mobile devices, than it is to use on the website.
All that clutter disappears and that unnecessary right side-bar is also completely missing, which makes a huge difference to the look and feel of the website, as well as your ability to use it.
From the outset, it appears as thought the BetRivers app is the primary source of play for their users and the entire design of the BetRivers website was done with a mobile-first approach, which would make sense and also explain why the app is a million times better to use than the website.
The BetRivers help section is really low quality and they attempt to answer some frequently asked questions by users but when you see the help section, it appears to be aimed at SEO more than actually helping users find the information they need to make their lives better.
The questions are quite irrelevant and thankfully, there is the option to talk to support via chat or email.
On the Google Play Store, the BetRivers app has a rating of 3.1 out of 5, after 180-odd reviews. There are a lot of complaints about the Android version of the app and how it is incompatible with the latest android devices or OS. It is quite slow and full of glitches for android users and the story isn’t too far away on the Apple App Store.
Users have given BetRivers a 4.2 out of 5 rating, but again, there are very few users who have bothered to leave reviews so far. Most of the complaints were about the Casino and how very few people won any money despite putting in over $1500, but at least the issues of android devices do not seem to appear on the iOS devices so far.
To conclude, BetRivers isn’t going to blow your mind when it comes to betting apps but if you are looking for a reputed name in the industry with a long history of providing a good experience to customers, then BetRivers might have what you need to enjoy your sports betting experience.
They are not going to be unique but they do have a lot of unique features, some of which appear to be rebranded versions of the same things others are doing. However, the way it is presented is quite cool and if nothing else, they are a great second or third app to have on your phone, provide you don’t have an android device!
