For nearly 50 years, SP Apparel, a Quebec-based company, has been the backbone of NHL jersey production, crafting every jersey worn in the league.
Despite the NHL's recent transition from Adidas to Fanatics as the official outfitter, the production process remains in the capable hands of SP Apparel.
"We've been responsible for manufacturing and developing NHL jerseys for the last 49 years," said Mike Quinn, SP Apparel's vice president of sales.
The company produces approximately 120,000 jerseys annually, including game jerseys, practice jerseys, socks, and retail versions.
While Fanatics will take over the design and branding, the actual production will continue in SP Apparel's factory in St-Hyacinthe, ensuring consistency in quality and service.
"With all the different brands that have been on ice since 1975, we've always been the manufacturer behind the brand," Quinn emphasized.
The transition to Fanatics won't bring major changes to the jerseys this season.
The focus has been on making minor adjustments, such as reinforcing the sleeves and tweaking the shoulder embossment, to ensure a smooth transition without compromising the quality.
"To develop a new jersey takes three to five years, so we decided to make as few changes as possible for this season," Quinn explained.
SP Apparel's commitment to service and quality has been crucial in maintaining its longstanding relationship with the NHL.
The company works closely with local teams and the NHL to rigorously test new materials and designs, ensuring that each jersey meets the league's exacting standards.
As the 2024-2025 NHL season approaches, fans can expect the same high-quality jerseys on the ice, crafted by SP Apparel's team of 150 sewers and 80 support staff.
"I think everyone's going to be very happy with the product on the ice this season," Quinn concluded.
Jack Hughes values comfort, but the NHL considers mandatory safety gear after a tragic death last season. Changes may be on the horizon for player safety.
