August is usually quiet in the NHL, but this year saw unexpected action with offer sheets, trades, and signings keeping the league buzzing.
With the new season just moments away, here's a look at the major highlights:
Blues' Bold Double Offer Sheet Success
St. Louis Blues grabbed attention on August 10 by making rare offer sheets to Edmonton Oilers' restricted free agents Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.
The Blues offered Broberg a two-year deal at $4.58 million annually and Holloway a two-year contract at $2.29 million per year.
St. Louis had to trade with Pittsburgh to retrieve their 2025 second-round pick to facilitate these deals.
After a week, Edmonton declined to match, allowing Broberg and Holloway to join St. Louis.
Blues GM Doug Armstrong defended his strategy, saying offer sheets are simply a legitimate tool to improve the roster, not a tactic to harm other teams.
Oilers' Quick Response with Roster Revamp
The Oilers didn't stand still after losing Broberg and Holloway.
On August 18, they traded Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks for Ty Emberson and acquired forward Vasily Podkolzin from Vancouver.
Edmonton also received defensive prospect Paul Fischer from St. Louis in a separate deal.
Oilers GM Stan Bowman expressed confidence in the new-look lineup and hinted at potential further moves to bolster their roster as the season approaches.
Montreal Canadiens Take a Chance on Patrik Laine
On August 19, the Montreal Canadiens traded for winger Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for defenseman Jordan Harris.
Laine, who faced a challenging season with injuries and personal issues, is eager to revive his career in Montreal.
He aims to return to his high-scoring form and contribute significantly to the Canadiens' success.
Laine's addition has excited his new teammates, with captain Nick Suzuki calling him a perfect fit for the team's needs.
Jets Trade McGroarty Amid Signing Stalemate
The Winnipeg Jets traded top prospect Rutger McGroarty to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Brayden Yager after learning McGroarty was unwilling to sign with them.
Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff revealed that McGroarty expressed doubts about signing since the development camp.
The Jets made the move to ensure they received value in return, adding Yager, a talented center, to their ranks.
Sharks Score Big with Askarov from Predators
On August 23, the San Jose Sharks acquired elite goaltending prospect Yaroslav Askarov from the Nashville Predators, alongside Nolan Burke and a 2025 third-round pick, in exchange for David Edstrom, a 2025 first-rounder, and goaltender Magnus Chrona.
Askarov sought a trade after Nashville solidified its goaltending future by extending Juuse Saros.
Despite the public nature of Askarov's request, Predators GM Barry Trotz felt the team got fair value.
Major Signings and RFAs Still Seeking Deals
Seattle Kraken's Matty Beniers and Carolina Hurricanes' Seth Jarvis signed long-term extensions, securing seven- and eight-year deals, respectively.
However, several restricted free agents, including Detroit's Moritz Seider, Winnipeg's Cole Perfetti, and Boston's Jeremy Swayman, remain unsigned with training camps just around the corner.
Jack Hughes values comfort, but the NHL considers mandatory safety gear after a tragic death last season. Changes may be on the horizon for player safety.
