Amid accusations of resembling a Nazi symbol, Germany's national soccer jerseys are set for a redesign, particularly focusing on the number "4".
The German Football Association (DFB) made a significant announcement Monday, responding to concerns raised by social media users who pointed out that the number "44" bore a striking resemblance to the logo used by Nazi paramilitary units known as the Schutzstaffel (SS).
In a statement released by the DFB, they highlighted their earlier submission of jersey designs to UEFA, ensuring compliance and denying any association with Nazi symbolism.
However, given the gravity of the issue, the DFB has initiated plans to develop an alternative design for the contentious digit.
Although the German national teams do not currently use the number "44," Adidas's online customization services allowed users to personalize jerseys, inadvertently leading to the proliferation of images featuring the disputed number.
Responding swiftly, Adidas announced its intention to remove the number "44" option from customization services, reinforcing their stance against xenophobia and hatred.
The German sportswear giant also removed the option to personalize German team jerseys from its websites.
This controversy unfolds shortly after the unveiling of Germany's new uniforms, to be donned by both men's and women's teams, ahead of the upcoming UEFA European Championship hosted by Germany this summer.
While Adidas' decision to block the number "44" addresses immediate concerns, questions linger about the future availability of the customization service and the company's stance on the matter.
This incident serves as a reminder of the sensitivity surrounding historical symbols and the importance of vigilance in modern contexts.
