In a decisive move, NCAA president Charlie Baker has declared intentions to prohibit college prop bets across all US markets, citing mounting worries over competition integrity and reports of athlete harassment.
Baker voiced alarm over the surging threat of prop bets, stating, "Sports betting issues are on the rise... leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed."
He further disclosed the organization's collaborative efforts with states to combat these challenges, noting, "The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responding by banning college prop bets."
Ohio is one state heeding the NCAA's call to action. Last month, its Casino Control Commission (OCCC) enforced a ban on player prop bets on college sports, following a direct request from Baker to the commission's executive director, Matt Schuler.
This initiative follows the NCAA's ongoing efforts to protect student-athletes, sparked by a study revealing alarming rates of harassment linked to gambling.
The organization has advocated for stronger protections and rolled out educational resources, such as the sports betting e-learning module.
Baker urged other states to emulate Ohio, Vermont, and Maryland in prohibiting college prop bets, emphasizing the NCAA's commitment to safeguarding student-athletes and upholding sports integrity.
"The NCAA is drawing the line on sports betting to protect student-athletes and to protect the integrity of the game – issues across the country these last several days show there is more work to be done," he reiterated.
Maryland and Vermont have already implemented bans on college prop bets, with Maryland's prohibition taking effect from March 1st.
Additionally, the NCAA recently launched the Draw the Line campaign to educate student-athletes about the risks associated with sports betting and gambling harm.
The move underscores the organization's proactive approach to address evolving challenges in the sports wagering landscape while prioritizing the well-being and integrity of collegiate sports.
