While basketball remains the same sport, the differences between NBA and international rules lead to distinct styles of play.
These differences can challenge NBA players, some faltering while others thrive.
Michael Meeks, an analyst with the Canadian men's team at the Olympics and a 2000 competitor, highlights the mindset needed to succeed.
"If you like the challenge, if you like to measure yourself, if you like to be tested mentally, physically, emotionally," Meeks says, "If you've got a growth mindset, and you're an ultimate competitor, these are the kind of characteristics that players need to have to be impactful at this."
Dillon Brooks, the emotional leader of Canada's bronze-winning team at last year's World Cup, exemplifies this mindset.
In Canada's first game at Paris 2024, an 86-79 win over Greece, Brooks scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds.
However, Brooks, who plays for the Houston Rockets, fouled out, as did another aggressive defender, Lu Dort.
In the NBA, it takes six fouls to be disqualified, whereas in the Olympics, it's five, with Olympic games being shorter at 40 minutes compared to the NBA's 48.
Meeks notes that the shortened game length makes each possession more valuable.
"There are fewer possessions in FIBA, so every possession you've got to be as efficient as you possibly can."
Aside from game length, there are several other differences.
The FIBA court is slightly smaller than the NBA court, and the three-point line is closer.
Players can also touch the ball above the rim, unlike in the NBA.
There is no defensive three-second violation, allowing defenders to camp in the key.
Joe Raso, a former Team Canada assistant coach and now the Canadian Elite Basketball League's director of operations, sees defensive rules as the biggest gamechanger.
"NBA defense is like WWE rules. They want to promote offense by limiting defense. In FIBA, you can do whatever you have to do to stop that other team."
The defensive flexibility allowed Canada to load up against Greece's Giannis Antetokounmpo, forcing other Greek players to beat them.
The smaller court size also rewards teamwork over individual play, favouring European players who grew up under FIBA coaching.
Raso emphasizes the importance of coaching in FIBA, where fewer timeouts require better organization and teaching during practice.
Canada Basketball focused on continuity and FIBA experience after failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, which has helped build cohesion among the players.
Despite the differences, talent remains crucial.
Canada's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, for instance, showcased his skill in the Olympic opener against Greece, securing a crucial basket against Antetokounmpo to ensure Canada's first Olympic win in 24 years.
Meeks concludes, "Regardless of the spacing, regardless of the dimension of the court, he's going to figure out a way to get a shot off or make a play."
Hurricane Milton ravages Tropicana Field, forcing sports postponements across Florida. The Rays, Lightning, and Magic face delays as teams and communities focus on recovery.
