As the Swedish league kicked off this spring, AIK's yellow-and-black-clad supporters unfurled a massive banner, narrating a tale of resistance against modern soccer's encroaching darkness.
The banner proclaimed, "The whole world? No! There was, in fact, a small area that successfully resisted the intruders, surrounded by modern football's smoldering ruins."
The intruder? VAR — the high-tech video review system integrated into soccer laws in 2018 to aid referees in crucial decisions.
While most leagues worldwide have adopted this technology, Sweden remains an outlier, cherishing the game's purity.
"The federation will not oppose the wishes of its member-run clubs," stated Ola Thews, AIK's vice-chairman, attributing VAR's absence to Sweden's unique club ownership model.
Despite initial federation support for VAR, the member clubs' stance prevails.
Thus, the federation has postponed discussions on its adoption.
This victory resonates with Swedish fans, who are proud of their rebel status in European soccer.
They are preserving a culture where fans matter.
"VAR ruins the euphoria of soccer," laments Thews, emphasizing the joy and passion of goal moments.
Compared to other sports, soccer's VAR pauses seem disruptive, compounded by occasional communication glitches and controversies.
Discontent grows in neighboring Norway, which reluctantly adopted VAR.
Inspired by Sweden's anti-VAR stance, fans aim to reverse its adoption.
Sweden's isolationist approach mirrors its COVID-19 response, emphasizing civic duty over lockdowns.
While the lack of VAR may hinder Sweden's international soccer performance, fans, echoing Premier League sentiments, prioritize immediate decisions over accuracy.
In England, VAR increased refereeing accuracy from 82% to 96%. Yet, Sweden's supporters remain unmoved, valuing the game's imperfections.
AIK midfielder Bersant Celina and supporters Hans Bolling and Nils-Olof Zethrin embody differing opinions on VAR.
While Celina and Zethrin acknowledge its potential, Bolling rejects it, citing disruptions to the game's flow.
The debate rages on among fans, with tradition clashing against technological advancement on Swedish soccer's battleground.
