Mastering the art of reading odds is pivotal for informed gambling decisions. Odds, presented in fractional, decimal, or moneyline formats, gauge the likelihood of an event and assist in predicting potential payouts and the associated risk.
Betting odds, numeric indicators of event likelihood, come in diverse formats like fractional, decimal, or moneyline odds. These formats vary based on region or the sportsbook offering them.
In moneyline odds, the symbols - and + reveal favourites and underdogs. A minus sign signifies the favorite, indicating the amount needed to bet for a $100 win. Conversely, the plus symbol denotes the underdog, indicating potential winnings for a $100 bet.
Odds and implied probability, while conveying event likelihood, differ in calculation. Odds express the ratio of favorable to unfavorable outcomes. At the same time, implied probability, a percentage, is calculated by dividing 1 by decimal odds and multiplying by 100.
Vig, or juice, is the commission taken by bookmakers. Represented as -110, for instance, a bettor pays $10 on a $100 bet. The vig ensures bookmakers profit, even with an equal number of winning and losing bets.
"Hold" is the profit percentage the sportsbook retains from total wagers. If a sportsbook takes in $100,000 and pays out $90,000, the hold is $10,000 or 10%. A key metric for profitability, a higher hold means more retained profits for the sportsbook.
